Jameson Greer, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), recently appeared on The Daily, the podcast of The New York Times, where he laid out the Trump administration's vision for U.S. trade policy. The conversation is particularly revealing because it explains the deeper reasons behind the protectionist fervor that has defined both of Donald Trump's presidencies.

The use of tariffs goes far beyond being a simple tactic to strong arm other countries into making concessions. It is deeply rooted in the MAGA movement's worldview. This perspective sees "real Americans," meaning white, monolingual, Protestant Americans, as the victims of globalization and the "woke" movement. Greer insists that, going forward, the United States will no longer ask anyone's permission to act in what the government defines as its national interest. Under this approach, there are no partners, only rivals in a zero sum game where the United States either wins the entire pot or burns down the casino.
