This month, the White House’s latest whims, far from resolving the conflict in the Middle East, have raised fresh doubts about the war with Iran and about U.S. strategy in Asia. President Donald Trump is creating so much confusion and mistrust that he is empowering both his own enemies, Iran, and his competitors, China.
The decision to scale back military exercises with South Korea, drills that have been conducted regularly since 1954, while simultaneously lavishing praise on North Korea, left many Asian governments perplexed and uneasy. Japan, concerned about what the U.S. decision might signal to China, was quick to stress that military cooperation with South Korea is vital to the region.
